MARKING  THE CAST:  Before the plaster is completely hardened, the top of the cast should be marked and dated to permit identification in the examination and also for in-court identification.  It takes a cast approximately 20 to 30 minutes to completely harden, depending on its size and thickness.  It will take several days for the cast to cure and dry completely.  The must be dried at room temperature.

  62. PRESERVING THE CAST:  Caution should be exercised in handling the cast after it has hardened and been picked up.  A padded box is best for transporting to the laboratory.  Casts have been known to shrink when drying and expand slightly when exposed to high humidity.  Hence, it is recommended that such evidence be stored in a cool and dry evidence room.
